THE Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is urging the people of Sibu to observe Earth Hour on March 27.
People should switch off their lights and unnecessary electrical appliances from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on that day, said SMC secretary Hii Chang Kee.
“We are encouraging participants to switch off especially the lights outside their house.
“The campaign includes supermarkets, government departments and businesses. On the part of the council, we will dim the lights in certain parks and markets,” he said.
He added that during the hour, people should take time to reflect on the environment and what they can do to protect their planet. SMC is also targetting commercial buildings including hotels, shopping complexes, offices, government buildings and places of worship.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 to raise awareness on climate change, to create a sustainable future.
